Five new PCR Basic Modules published

PCR Basic Modules are the building blocks for PCRs. Image: Nomi / istockphoto.com

Five new PCR Basic Modules have now been published are are ready to be used as starting points for PCR for underlying groups, classes and subclasses:

PCR Basic Modules are defined on the two-digit level of the UN CPC classification system, e.g. 01 or 02. They do not constitute PCRs in themselves, but are instead intended as a starting point for development of PCRs that are defined at the three, four or five digit level of the UN CPC classification. Deviations of LCA methodology compared to the PCR Basic Modules is allowed, but should be highlighted in the document.

The documents are available for download directly in word format. Our hope is that this will enable the documents to be used even more easily as templates in the preparation of PCRs by the PCR Moderators together with other stakeholders.

If you have any questions regarding the PCR Basic Modules, please contact the Secretariat at pcr@environdec.com.

EPDs discussed on Spanish conference

On November 22th, the “Sustainability and environmental management in furniture, habitat and wood sector” event was held in Bilbao, Spain.

This event was organized by the “Cluster Association of the Habitat, Wood, Office and Hospitality Sector” with the collaboration of the International EPD System Associate Partner IHOBE (Basque Country’s Government Environmental Public Agency) and the member organization IK INGENIERIA.
The objective of the event was to strengthen sustainability and promote Ecodesign and Environmental Product Declarations in the field of furniture, habitat and wood construction sectors.

A hundred manufacturer representatives and sustainability experts meet in a very in depth event and attend 20 different presentations. Between them:

  • The recognized individual verifier RUBEN CARNERERO, explained how to inform stakeholders and clients about environmental performance of their products through environmental product declarations and ecodesign activities, and detailed the key elements and of the International EPD System certification program.
  • Two EPD certified manufacturers, PROTEC and EZARRI, explained their efforts towards sustainability and their experience developing and certifying environmental product declarations with the International EPD System.
  • 3 other manufacturers showed their works and LCA studies for developing environmental product declarations following the International EPD System Product Category Rules, which will be certified during last month of 2013 and first quarter of 2014.

Thanks to this event, the investment of the Basque Country’s manufacturer network towards sustainability and Environmental Product Declaration development was confirmed (approximately 75% of Spanish certified environmental product declarations within the International EPD System are from Basque Country region companies, which will be increased with new certifications during next months).

Experiences from 15 years of PCR management in the International EPD® System

The presentation “Experiences from 15 years of PCR management in the International EPD® System” is now available for download. It was given by Kristian Jelse of the Secretariat during the SETAC Europe LCA Case Study Symposium in the session of Product (Environmental Footprint) Category Rules.

Although much progress has been made in PCR Management in the history of PCRs, there is still need for continuous improvement the PCR process by programme operators. In the presentation, an overview was given of some of the key learnings that have been made during 15 years since the inception of the International EPD(r) System, e.g. the use of the UN CPC system for product classification and the recently introduced pilot network of PCRs for food.
