The results from the 2013 EPD Stakeholders and PCR Moderators surveys are in. In total, 56 responses were submitted from stakeholders in industry, consultants, government and universities/institutes.
Key results, EPD Stakeholders:
The EPD Stakeholders participating in the study were happy with the support given by the Secretariat (mean: 4.0 out of five) during the EPD process. Getting information via the website or by contacting the Secretariat was OK but we still see room for improvement (3.7 and 3.8). Among those that had participated in one of the EPD Stakeholder conferences in Bologna or Stockholm, they were very pleased with the two events (4.2).
The EPD stakeholders were also asked to provide feedback on six key characteristics of the International EPD® System from “do not agree” (1) to “fully agree” (5). The results are displayed in the picture and show that the system is viewed as very credible and transparent, while there is still room for improvement in the cost-effectiveness of LCA-based declarations.
Key results, PCR Moderators:
The PCR Moderators were happy (mean: 4.0) with the existence of PCR Basic Modules, serving as starting points/templates for PCR development. The Basic Modules were recently updated to comply with the latest programme instructions, which should make them even more useful.
The support from the Secretariat during the PCR Process had room for improvement (mean: 3.7). With the quite recent introduction of a PCR Project Manager at the Secretariat as well as the pilot network of PCRs for food, we hope to have started the process in improving this service.
According the results of the survey, the weakest link of the PCR Process appears to be the comments from other stakeholders. They are not always seen as useful (mean: 3.2) when coming from those not very familiar with the EPD concept or with the semblance of lobbying. The Secretariat is working with broadening the stakeholder involvement in the open consultation. For example by making it possible to receive all PCR consultation within a certain product group.
