Using EPD in Building Assessment Schemes

Image: (c) iStockphoto.com / namatae

The interest for environmental declarations in building rating systems and certification schemes has increased in the last few years. This may be due to recognition of EPD benefits such as the life cycle approach, the transparent disclosure of relevant impact categories and the independent verification.

We have updated the text explaining how and why EPDs may be used for this application.

Using EPDs in environmental management and ecodesign

Using EPDs in environmental management and ecodesign

EPD is a useful tool for environmental management, whether the environmental management system (EMS) is certified according to ISO 14001 or EMAS or based on other guidelines. By using EPDs, the organization can identify, control, monitor and evaluate the environmental performance in a life cycle perspective and also communicate the result to different stakeholders.

Ecodesign is the concept of taking environmental issues into consideration when designing and developing new products, or when updating existing products. It may also be referred to as or Design for Environment (DfE), eco-design or, more generally, Environmental design. EPD, and the underlying life cycle assessment (LCA) study, may be used as a way to measure impacts and avoiding sub-optimization.

We have described how EPDs can be used in the context of environmental management and ecodesign, use the links below to read more.

EPDs can be an useful tool in green public procurement and ISO 14025 states that one of the applications of environmental declarations is procurement. However, so far it is not common to use EPDs in public procurement although there is a great potential.

We have updated the website with more information on how EPDs can be used in public procurement. If you have comments, questions or want to share experiences, please contact the secretariat info@environdec.com .

Seminar on life cycle based requirements in public procurement

Kristian Jelse, International EPD System

Participants from municipalities, companies and authorities took part in a seminar on May 6 in Stockholm, Sweden. The seminar was jointly arranged by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and the International EPD® System and focused on lifecycle-based environmental requirements in public procurement.

At the seminar, the EU's new directive on public procurement directive was discussed. The new directive has clarified the possibility of using environmental requirements with a lifecycle perspective.

"It is very gratifying that the interest is so great for lifecycle-based environmental requirements in public procurement," says Sven-Olof Ryding, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.

The Swedish companies Riksbyggen and SCA presented how they work with the life cycle perspective in their environmental management. The Swedish Transport Administration and the Stockholm County Council talked about how they use lifecycle requirements in their procurement activities. Common to all was that they called for more challenging requirements that rewarded the products had the least environmental impact in a life cycle perspective.
