First dual registered EPDs from the IBU programme published

First dually-registered EPDs

The four first EPDs from the IBU EPD system to be dually-registered in the International EPD® system have now been published. The two pioneering companies are Dorma and H+H.

The dual registration is made possible through a mutual recognition agreement between the two programme operators, and was preceded an extensive analysis of the similarities and differences between the two programmes. Dual registration is a service offered for EPDs of construction products that are compliant with the EN 15804 standard.

The dual registration means that the logotypes of both programmes and two registration numbers may be carried on the EPD, and that the EPD is published on both www.environdec.com and the IBU website. Having the dual registration offers a market advantage to the EPD owner as the logotypes may have different market recognition.

"We are very happy to see the first dual registration of four EPDs from IBU into the International EPD® System. We expect our collaboration with IBU to be used as a template for similar co-operations across Europe in the future"  - Kristian Jelse, Project Manager at the International EPD® System.

Europrofil EPD becomes first with ECO Platform logotype in the International EPD® System

Event in Brussels. Image [c] ECO Platform

The International EPD® System has become an approved programme to use the ECO Platform logotype on EPDs for construction products compliant with the standard EN 15804. To be able to do this, an audit was carried out to ensure that the rules and procedures for verification of the programme were compliant with the EN 15804 and the common quality guidelines by the ECO Platform.

During the audit, a sample EPD from the company Europrofil was also assessed. With the audit completed, the Europrofil EPD for light gauge steel profiles was allowed to use the ECO Platform logotype. This was highlighted during an event in Brussels together with EPDs from other approved programme operators.

The possibility to include the ECO Platform logotype for EN 15804-compliant EPDs for construction products is now available to all companies in the International EPD® System, given that certain requirements are met. The use of the logotype is subject to a fee of €100 per EPD and year. This fee is payed to ECO Platform via the International EPD® System and invoived together with the annual fee. For more information about this option, please contact the Secretariat.

Clarification regarding registration of EPDs for Absorbent hygiene products

Update 2015-02-19: Version 2.0 of the PCR has now been published.

It has come to the attention of the Secretariat that there is currently a high demand to verify and register EPDs for the product category "Absorbent hygiene products".

There is currently no Product Category Rules (PCR) available to verify and register an EPD for this product category, as the available PCR expired 2014-10-14. PCRs have a limited validity after which they must be updated before they may be used for verification.

The PCR in question (PCR 2011:14) is currently ongoing the process to be updated, which includes making the document compliant with the latest General Programme Instructions. We hope to have a new version available in February 2015 for registration of new EPDs and/or extend the validity of already-registered EPDs.

In the meantime, what we offer companies wishing to verify and register EPDs for the product category is to:

  • Provide you with a signed letter explaining that it is not currently possible to verify and register EPDs for the product category in the International EPD® System,
  • Pre-book registration numbers for you to use after the PCR has become available,
  • Receive and attest a Letter of Commitment from you directed to your customers/stakeholders that you intend to verify and register EPDs as soon as the updated PCR is available.

Use of the EPD® logotype and reference to the International EPD® System is only allowed in certified EPDs registered within the International EPD® System. To be referred to as an type III environmental declaration, the document must follow the rules and procedures of a programme operator acting in accordance with ISO 14025.

Please contact the Secretariat with any questions.

PCR published: Professional footwear

PCR Professional footwear

Product Category Rules (PCR) for declaring the environmental impact of Professional footwear have now been published in the International EPD® System.

The development of the PCR was led by Carlo Brondi at the Synesis Consortium as the appointed PCR Moderator in accordance with the PCR Process described in the General Programme Instructions of the International EPD® System, which are based on ISO 14025. During the development of the document, it has been subject for an open consultation on www.environdec.com as well as a review by the appointed Technical Committee.

The PCR is now available for any company to voluntarily develop and publish information on the life cycle environment impact of sparkling wine in a transparent and comparable way.

Note: This PCR was initially launched as "Work footwear". The name was updated to better match the terminology in the industry.

Experiences of EPD Process Certification presented in Japan

Experiences of EPD Process Certification presented in Japan

Politecnico di Milano and Reno De Medici present their experiences of EPD Process Certification at the Ecobalance 2014 conference in Tsukuba, Japan. In the presentation given on October 29th by Lucia Rigamonti, they conclude that:

[The EPD Process] will give the organisation the possibility to simplify the achievement of EPDs certification for many products, saving time and money. [...]  well managed internal EPD routines will make data collection and its conversion into EPDs more straightforward and less expensive, allowing the organisation to operate it in a resource- and time efficient manner.

Ecobalance 2014 was organised by the Institute of Life Cycle Assessment, Japan and was the eleventh edition of the conference series, held biannually since 1994.

Update of PCR for Construction products available for open consultation

PCR 2012:01

The PCR for Construction products and construction services will expire in January 2015 and is therefore being updated. This PCR is important as it is the most common ways for companies to develop and register EN 15804-compliant PCRs in the International EPD® System.

This PCR is applicable as a PCR to all construction products, with the limitations that:

  • A cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-gate with options system boundary is used
  • A declared unit is used (instead of a functional unit)

Any stakeholder is invited to comment on the draft before 2015-01-13. The document will thereafter undergo review and is expected to be published soon afterwards to ensure that there is a very limited time period where no valid PCR is available.

Results from the 2014 EPD Stakeholders and PCR Moderators surveys

EPD Stakeholders - Ranking of six key characteristics of the programme

The results from the 2014 EPD Stakeholders and PCR Moderators surveys are in. In total, 33 responses were submitted from stakeholders in industry, consultants, government and universities/institutes. As the number of respondents was quite low, especially compared to last year's survey, the results are presented for transparency, but only limited conclusions may be drawn from the results.

Key results, EPD Stakeholders:

The EPD Stakeholders participating in the study thought that support given by the Secretariat during the EPD process was OK with similar results on getting information via the website or by contacting the Secretariat was. The numbers are lower than last year, but very much affected by single respondents answering "1" as they did not know who the Secretariat was.

The EPD stakeholders were also asked to provide feedback on six key characteristics of the International EPD® System from “do not agree” (1) to “fully agree” (5). The results are displayed in the picture and show that the system is viewed as very international, transparent and objective, while there is still room for improvement in the cost-effectiveness of LCA-based declarations.

Key results, PCR Moderators:

The PCR Moderators answering the survey were happy with the existence of PCR Basic Modules, serving as starting points/templates for PCR development. The support from the Secretariat during the PCR Process also received a very good score (mean: 4.4 of 5).

According the results of the survey, the weakest link of the PCR Process appears to be the comments from other stakeholders. They are not always seen as useful when coming from those not very familiar with the EPD concept. Some PCR Moderators had experienced that very few comments were submitted by stakeholders during the open consultation.

The Secretariat would like to direct a warm thank you to those who participated in the survey, and will use the results to further improve its practices and communication. We hope that you will see the ongoing improvements, and are always happy to receive feedback via info@environdec.com.

First pre-verified EPD® Tool published

The International EPD® System has accepted the first pre-verified tool for creating EPDs: "WBCSD-CSI tool for concrete and cement EPDs", with registration number S-P-00553. The pre-verification of this tool means that some of the checks that is normally done by the verifier is already assured if the tool has been used. There is still a need for verification, e.g. that the input data is correct, but the time needed for this phase is reduced if the tool is used.

The EPD verifier shall ensure that data uploaded to the Tool are in line with the verified LCA core model implemented in the Tool. Data generated using the Tool is equivalent to specific or selected generic data, and does not need further verification during the verification stage of the EPD. The verification statement written by the EPD verifier must include information on which data was uploaded to the Tool to produce the EPD. The EPD verifier shall also check that Tool maintenance and updates have been performed and verified.

This pre-verified tool is expected to act as a model for similar tools in other industries, simplifying the procedure to develop and register an EPD® and reducing the time needed for verification.

The International EPD® System is now approved to use the ECO Platform logotype on EPDs

ECO Platform event to launch the logotype

The International EPD® System has recently become an approved programme to use the ECO Platform logotype on EPDs for construction products compliant with the standard EN 15804.

The ECO Platform is a collaboration platform for programme operators in Europe, and its logotype is intended to act as a quality assurance of the member programmes. The logotype today symbolizes that the programme has successfully undergone an audit of its verification processes and practices to adhere to common quality rules.

New and existing EPDs in the International EPD® System may now carry a special ECO Platform registration number and the ECO Platform logotype, given that:

  • the EPD is produced in accordance with the General Programme Instructions, version 2.01 or later,
  • the EPD is produced based on a PCR compliant with EN 15804,
  • the EPD is compliant with EN 15804,
  • the scope of the EPD is a construction product as defined by European legislation,
  • the EPD has been verified using the correct verification report dated 2014-10-30 or later.

The use of the logotype is subject to a fee of €100 per EPD and year. This fee is payed to ECO Platform via the International EPD® System and invoiced together with the annual fee. For more information about this option, please contact the Secretariat.
