Clay blocks under study fall into the categories of masonry blocks and floor blocks.

In accordance with EN 771-1:2011 + A1:2015 – Specification for masonry units – Part 1: Clay masonry units, clay masonry blocks are defined as manufactured products made from clay or other argillaceous materials, mixed with or without sand or other additives, and fired at a sufficiently high temperature to ensure a ceramic bond with mortar joints. These products are intended for the construction of load-bearing and non-load-bearing masonry structures, either exposed or plastered, such as facing and plastered masonry, structural and non-structural walls, including internal partitions and walls for building and civil engineering purposes.

In accordance with EN 15037-3:2009 + A1:2011 – Precast concrete products – Beam-and-block floor systems – Part 3: Clay blocks, clay floor blocks are defined as products made from clay, mixed with or without additives, intended for use together with precast concrete beams conforming to UNI EN 15037-1, with or without cast-in-place concrete, for the construction of beam-and-block floors and roof systems.

A brick is a block of ceramic material used in construction, in different shapes and sizes.

Bricks are shaped into several different types with different dimensions. The only difference in the production process for these types is the shape and dimensions of the matrix/extruder used.

These types, with their dimensions, weight and application ratio (pieces/m2) are presented in the following table.
