V&G Parapets (aluminium)

Bridge parapets are safety barriers installed on the edge of a bridge or similar structure with a vertical drop. Varley & Gulliver aluminium parapets are suitable for roads, railways, ports, industrial settings, car parks and airports. The parapets have a modular design, consisting of 3, 4 or 5 horizontal rail sections located to supporting posts at heights of 1 m (standard) to 1.8 m. The standard rails can accommodate slight curves (radii of 50 m) and small variations of vertical alignment without modification, and the system is light, quick to install and versatile. The aluminium construction offers high resistance to corrosion and no maintenance. Varley & Gulliver aluminium parapets can be clad with mesh or sheeted with a range of materials to prevent pedestrian access and for aesthetic reasons.

In this EPD, Varley & Gulliver Parapet (aluminium) products manufactured by Hill & Smith VRS are represented by the ‘1000 N2 W2 3.0 m VGAN 1001’ parapet system. This product comprises aluminium components including posts and/or brackets (depending on fixing type), lengths of barrier and bolts used to make up one linear metre of Varley & Gulliver 1000 N2 W2 3.0 m VGAN 1001 Parapet (aluminium). This product variant is the most commonly installed and therefore chosen to represent the product group.

Varley & Gulliver 1000 N2 W2 3.0 m VGAN 1001 Parapets (aluminium) are a modular system with aluminium supporting posts of 1 m height, spaced at up to 3.0 m centres. The system consists of 3, 4 or 5 horizontal 12.0 m long extruded aluminium rail sections of 114 mm x 70 mm, located to supporting posts at heights specified per project. The rails are bolted to the supporting posts via sliding clamp bars. Base plates for the posts are bolted onto bridge or retaining wall structures. The representative parapet system is without mesh infilling. The parapet system has a containment class of N2 (EN 1317-2 normal containment) and an impact severity level B.

The product variants within the group are essentially the same, but the mass of material changes due to e.g. post spacing, parapet height, with or without mesh etc. The mass of the representative product is towards the lower end of the mass range (see additional environmental information), however, it is still considered representative of the product group as this is a typical configuration installed in the UK. The differences in mass between product variants cause the variation in environmental impact between variants of the group to be large.
