General Programme Instructions

Guiding Rules of the International EPD System

The General Programme Instructions (GPI) of the International EPD System (IES) define the overarching rules for the administration and operation of the programme, in accordance with ISO 14025 for Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).

When the GPI is updated:

  • For Product Category Rules (PCRs)
Existing PCRs remain published and retain their original validity.
Updates to the GPI are integrated into these PCRs incrementally, when the PCRs are due for revision or during their period of validity. New PCRs currently in development must align with the latest version of the GPI.

  • For Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs)
Published EPDs also retain their original validity. Ongoing surveillance during their validity period will be based on the PCR and GPI version used at the time of verification.
During the transition period, EPDs may continue to be published or updated using valid PCRs developed under a previous version of the GPI, provided that no updated PCR based on the latest GPI is available.

Note: By adopting the GPI of IES, one automatically accepts its General Terms of Use. Please make sure you agree with the General Terms of Use before using materials covered in GPI.
