Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)
Product information
This sector EPD covers medium density fibreboard (MDF) manufactured in Australia from Australian grown wood chips and pulp logs.
MDF is a composite panel valued for its homogeneity that allows precision joinery work and finishing. These properties have led to MDF being widely used to manufacture furniture, kitchen cabinets, doors and mouldings. MDF panels are composed of wood, resin and wax.
The declared unit is 1 square metre of MDF. The scope is ‘cradle-to-gate' with options. The production stage includes production of wood inputs, transport to manufacturing site, chipping, screening, defibration, drying, blending, mat forming, pressing, finishing, melamine overlay and packaging. Four end-of-life scenarios are included: two for landfill, one energy recovery, and one for recycling.
The document complies with the requirements for an industry-wide EPD under the Green Building Council of Australia's Green Star rating system and the Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating scheme of the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).
