New version of EPD registration number

As the demand for the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) grows, more and more companies are applying for EPDs to showcase the environmental impact of products. This leads to an increased volume in the overall market globally, as well as at EPD International.

In response to such a need, we are releasing a new format of the registration number for the EPDs to provide greater transparency and clarity. The new registration number will take form in the International EPD System (IES) and contain version update information in the last 3 digits.

  • New format: EPD-IES-XXXXXXX:XXX
  • Old format: S-P-XXXXX

Letters in the new registration number

The new format of the registration number comprises of letters indicative of the EPD International System. The new registration number also provides users with information of the program operator under which an EPD is registered.

The design of the new registration number brings in clarity by introducing the letters IES to stand for the International EPD System, replacing S-P which is the initials of Swedish program and is no longer representative for the EPDs generated at the international level. The design of the new registration number also takes into account the potential implementation of Social Product Declarations (SPDs) at EPD International, as the fade-out of S-P number could avoid the misunderstanding and enhance overall clarity on EPD and SPD in the registration number.

Digits in the new registration number

The design to increase the number of digits serves the purpose of version management. As the need of EPDs are expanding at scale, so is the need for registration numbers connected to the EPDs. The inclusion of the version number in the last 3 digits after the colon, allows the verified product to keep the same registration number, at the same time provides clearer information on its version update for transparency purpose.

How does the new registration number work in practice?

When it concerns existing EPDs, the owner will receive two registration numbers. The numbers are the same, but one version with SP letters and the other version with EPD-IES letters.

This means that if users search for an EPD on our EPD library, they will arrive at the same EPD despite of using either the old or new registration number.

For any updates on the EPD that has both new and old registration numbers, the system shall then automatically generate the new registration number with version number 001 and save it with the old registration number in this format EPD-IES-0012345:001 (S-P 12345)

For a newly created EPD after the new registration number release, the owner will only receive the new registration number.
