More specific rules for defining the electricity market
To help our customers and to support more harmonized EPDs, we have now released more guidance on the modelling of electricity.
The guidance specifies that “the market” in the hierarchy for selecting inventory data when modelling electricity use, shall be defined as being the country where the electricity is used, with exceptions for six countries for which sub-national regions shall be used: Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, and USA.
Note that market-based electricity modelling shall still be used, with preference for electricity backed up by Guarantees of Origin (or similar) and the residual grid mix.
This guidance has been added in the EPD and PCR FAQs, in version 1.2.5 of PCR 2019:14 Construction products, and will be implemented in the next version of the GPI.
To not interfere with ongoing EPD developments, there is a 6-month transition period ending 2023-04-30 under which other definitions of the market are accepted (but it is recommended to adhere to the above guidance also in the transition period).
