30 June 2026 | General, GPI, EPD
ISO 14025:2026 has now been published, marking the most significant update to the international standard for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in nearly 20 years. As an active contributor throughout the revision process, EPD International AB welcomes the new requirements, which will strengthen quality, harmonization, digitalization and impartiality across EPD programmes worldwide.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has officially published ISO 14025:2026 (Environmental statements and programmes for products — Environmental product declarations (EPDs), representing the most comprehensive revision of the standard since its original publication in 2006. Developed by the ISO Environmental Management Technical Committee (ISO/TC 207), the updated standard establishes the principles and procedures for Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) programmes and independently verified life cycle assessment (LCA)-based environmental declarations.

Throughout the revision process, EPD International AB has actively contributed to the development of the new standard through its participation in the Swedish Institute for Standards (SIS) delegation within ISO/TC 207/SC3/WG12. Working group meetings brought together delegates from national standards bodies and official liaison organizations to ensure broad international consensus.

The revised standard introduces several important improvements that all EPD programmes worldwide will need to implement. Among the most significant changes are:

  1. New preferred terminology - EPDs are now clearly defined as independently verified LCA-based environmental statements, removing the “Type I, II, III” classification language. To clarify further with the support of ISO 14025:2026, neither self-declared environmental claims developed under ISO 14021 nor ecolabels developed under ISO 14024 are considered EPDs or a type of EPD.

  2. New normative references (ISO/TS 14027 and ISO/TS 14029) to strengthen harmonization between EPD Programmes.

  3. Introduction of new terminology and requirements for EPD tools, including the independent verification process of EPD Tools.

  4. Stronger emphasis on independence, impartiality, and conflict-of-interest  throughout different processes within EPD programmes.

Supporting ISO 14025:2026

EPD International AB actively supports the implementation of stricter requirements for quality, harmonization, digitalization, and impartiality: key principles that are deeply embedded in our International EPD System. As a result of our involvement during the revision, our General Programme Instructions (GPI) v5.0.1 are already closely aligned with this revised ISO14025:2026 standard.

The revision of the international standard was led by convenor Lindita Bushi, with Jimmy Yoler serving as the committee secretariat. We would like to thank Lindita Bushi and Jimmy Yoler for their commitment and valuable contributions throughout the revision process.
